Sustainability and Recyclability in Fruit Clamshell Packaging

2026 07/07

Sustainability has become a driving force in the fruit clamshell packaging industry. Consumers, retailers, and regulators are demanding packaging solutions that minimize environmental impact while maintaining product protection and presentation.

PET is a highly recyclable plastic material that can be recycled and reprocessed repeatedly after use, reducing plastic waste and white pollution, and meeting circular economy policy requirements in various countries. Sequoia Enterprise's clamshells are made from food-grade recyclable PET, offering high transparency, anti-fog properties, and strong pressure resistance. The company operates a zero-waste recycling system where all waste and scraps generated during production are returned to its exclusive recycling plant for 100% recycling and reuse.

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which entered into force in February 2025, mandates minimum PCR content requirements for plastic packaging. By 2030, food packaging must contain a minimum of 10% recycled PCR material, increasing to 50% by 2040. Other plastic packaging must contain 35% PCR by 2030 and 65% by 2040.

PLA clamshells offer another sustainable pathway. Made from renewable resources, PLA is biodegradable and industrially compostable, meeting EN 13432 and BPI compostability standards. Sequoia Enterprise manufactures biodegradable PLA trays, salad boxes, and clamshell containers designed for fresh fruit and vegetable packaging. As global plastic bans accelerate the shift toward sustainable materials, the demand for eco-friendly clamshell options continues to grow.
