Beyond traceability, active smart features are emerging: moisture-absorbing pads, ethylene scavengers, and antimicrobial coatings built into PET structures to extend shelf life. Some premium lines include low-cost temperature indicators that change color if the cold chain is broken.

While smart packaging adds a small cost, the benefits are clear: reduced waste (up to 15% for berries), fewer recalls, higher consumer trust, and stronger brand loyalty.
